How the Licenses Work

Image Reserve/Moments is an archive of genuine photographs, and most of them are licensed for editorial use. That is intentional. These are photographs of real places, people, events, objects, and moments - not images created or altered to fit a commercial brief.

Editorial use covers the kinds of things photographs naturally document: articles, journalism, books, documentaries, blogs, educational material, commentary, and other informational or cultural work. If you're using an image to illustrate or tell a story, this is generally the license you want.

A smaller selection of images is available under our Creative licenses for commercial and promotional uses. These give you broader rights when the image is being used as part of your own creative or marketing work.

Royalty-Free Editorial

For editorial and informational use. Use the image in articles, publications, blogs, documentaries, books, educational projects, and similar contexts.

Royalty-Free Creative

For commercial and promotional creative work, including websites, advertising, marketing, social media, and presentations.

Royalty-Free Creative Extended

For broader commercial applications where the image becomes part of something being sold or distributed, such as merchandise, products, templates, or other resale applications.

Not sure which one you need? If the photograph is helping you tell, document, explain, or discuss something, Editorial is probably the right license. If the photograph is helping you *sell or promote* something, look to Creative.

One Important Limitation

Editorial images cannot be used to promote, advertise, or endorse a product, service, business, person, or organization. In other words, you can use an Editorial image to talk about something, but not to sell something.

If the image appears in an advertisement, promotional campaign, sponsored content, product packaging, or other marketing material, you'll need a Creative license where available.
